Protecting fair skin isn't just about sunblock

Studies prove what we've had an inkling about for the longest time: sunblock isn't enough to protect fair skin.

Due to new studies in dermatology published last year, the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) says if you have fair skin, you need to should use multiple sun protection methods to avoid skin cancer.

So if you're of the population with lesser melanin, keep in mind the following tips when under the sun.

#1 Avoid the sun especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

#2 Seek medical attention immediately when you get a sunburn.

#3 Avoid tanning and UV-tanning beds at all costs.

#4 Always bring a cover-up over your bikini when at the beach. Don't forget to have a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

#5 Be discerning of you sunscreen. Make sure it blocks both UVA and UVB rays. It must contain an SPF of at least 15 for daily wear. When at the beach or doing outdoor sports, the SPF should be at least 30.

#6 Re-apply your sunscreen often, especially after swimming or excessive sweating in the sun.

#7 Thoroughly examine your skin head-to-toe every single month.

#8 See your physician for a professional skin exam every year. We know it's tedious. But trust us, these are but simple and almost cost-free precautions to ensure that your skin is safe. Your skin protects you every day and is integral to our physical being, so give it all the love it deserves!
